Dredd

  Ah yes i can still here the angry slurred version of Stallone's "I am the law!" echoing through my hollow 80's movie filled head.  Wait..what's this?  A newcomer has emerged victorious?  Yes, its true the new Dredd is quite well done and incredibly enjoyable.  From the beginning you need to know that this isnt the same goofy overly Hollywood Dredd, this is gritty, violent, and surprisingly deep.  You meet Dredd as he dresses in his biker leather and as he puts his helmet on (you don't see his face).  Karl urban takes the reigns in this iteration of Dredd an while I dont normally like Karl Urban I must say he was pretty good.  The only one of my complaints is that he seems to be sucking a lemon the entire movie.  He always has a pouty face as if someone stole his favorite murder tool.  Urban plays Dredd as a human, unlike Stallone's godlike character.  Dredd while one mean son of a bitch, inst invincible nor does he showboat.  He has a job to do and the law to protect and by god he protects it.  The story is basic if not stolen from The Raid.  The idea is simple, two judges go in on a routine murder investigation and fin themselves at odds with the kingpin of the mega structure.  (one grisly little lady)  Once again this isn't Stallone, there is no heroics here Dredd and his rookie he is assessing are in the shit and they know it.  As the roam the halls they dispense countless foes.  Oh did I mention this movie is violent?  Its really violent.  Like exit wound in slow motion violent.  Then there is the cinematography.  This film was meant for 3d.  the moments when the slowmo drug is used are brilliant.  Everything is 1% normal time and has a bubbly glow.  Wonderfully shot, makes me long to test the blu ray when it releases.  Overall if you cant tell i loved Dredd.  As a fan of the original I can tell you they skipped the silliness and went straight for the jugular.  Go see it,  its a great action flick with plenty more to offer.
